VET REFERRALS

If you have a challenging ophthalmology case, we are very happy to give advice either over the phone or by email. We do ask that you send the full history and ideally a well-focussed picture of the relevant eye/eyes, to allow us to best assist you.

Where possible, the option to refer is available at any stage, and at any time – out of hours consultations are usually available if you contact the emergency number found on our answering machine, call 01358 720060 to obtain the out of hours number. When referring, please again send full history and complete the referral form attached, although in the emergency situation a phone call to refer will suffice in the first instance. If a case is urgent a phone call is essential to ensure the vet is available.

In many cases, early referral can result in a better prognosis, in particular in the following situations where referral should be considered to be an emergency:

  • Deep stromal ulcer/descemetocoele
  • Melting corneal ulcers
  • Unexplained red eye
  • Acute onset blindness
  • Anterior lens luxation
  • Diabetic cataract (since Ken's retirement if you call we will be able to advise you if urgent surgery is possible)
  • Corneal laceration or penetrating corneal foreign body
  • Intraocular haemorrhage

As a general rule, if a corneal ulcer has not healed within one week of initiating treatment, referral should be considered for investigation of the cause of non-healing.

To complete the referral please email a full clinical history to reception@nevo.vet
